Kiwanians at Camp (1998)

HISTORY

January, 19, 2005

The Kiwanis Club of Regina sold its camp at Glen Harbour to a resident of the Glen Harbour area on January 1, 2005 after the camp had provided 74 years of service in the Kiwanis family with 40 years of continuous association with the Girl Guides of Canada in the Regina area.

The Kiwanis connection at Glen Harbour goes back to 1931 when the camp was started for underprivileged boys. Children were recommended for the camp by the Regina Welfare Bureau.

During World War II, the camp was used by the children of members of the military who were serving overseas.

The following references to the camp from past issues of the Kiwanis Bulletin were compiled by Trevor Quinn. More may be added as time permits. They provide a sample of the time and effort dedicated Kiwanians have contributed over the years. A special mention should be made to recognize the outstanding effort that has been made by Andy Rausch, Walter Gembey and Don Jesse in recent years and to the capable members of the Girl Guides. Thank you!

In 1957, the campsite was leased to the YMCA.

In 1964, it was used by the Boy Scouts.

In 1965, an agreement with the Girl Guides was reached for use of the camp facility at Glen Harbour and has continued until today [2005].

June 24, 1974 - We have received a report from Chairman Tom Howarth. The camp has been sadly neglected for a number of years and there is a lot of work to be done.

Sept. 23, 1974 - A work party is needed to replace the underground water line. Report to Golden Mile at 8:30 A.M. Sat. Sept. 21. Bring your lunch and a shovel and advise Tom Howarth if you are able to attend.

Sept. 30, 1974 - Work party at camp was made up of Jerry Bobbitt, Girv. Young, Tom Howarth, Pat Patterson, Lou Stewart and his two sons. Also present was our Honourary Member, Roy Drury. … The new water line has been installed.

(Copies of the above section of this review were provided to Stew Harrison, Don Jesse and Andy Rausch at the regular club meeting on Jan 17, 2005, attended by Phyllis White and Brenda Gartner of the Girl Guides)

April 9, 1984 - Clean - Up - Sat. Apr. 28. 10 Kiwanis are asked to meet at Northgate Mall at 8 A.M. with tools - paint brushes and lunch. Please let Steve Perris know if you can go and let’s get it all done on Saturday.

May 7, 1984 - Clean -Up - Sat. May 12. Our planned Saturday, April 28 clean-up was postponed because of bad weather, so you still have a chance to join the gang for a Kiwanis fun day. Our Steve Perris asks that everyone meet at Northgate Mall at 8 A.M. with tools - paint brushes - lunch. It’s important that we have a good turn-out as this will be the last week before the camp starts back in operation.

May 21, 1985 - Road gravelling has been authorized by the Board. Volunteer work parties are needed for fencing, painting and camp maintenance. Project Chairman, Harry Basaraba, will circulate a sign up list with choice of dates and times at the next meeting. He has expressed the wish that each member and particularly all new members will join a work-party for the fun and fellowship at least once this season.

June 17, 1985 - We all know that the camp cabins require major repairs or replacement and our trip to Glen Harbour will provide a pleasant evening out with a Kiwanis Family Picnic supper, and give us a chance to assess the cabin situation prior to discussing our plans at a near future meeting. Barbecues will be lit and hot and coffee will be supplied. Pack up your supper and family and join the fun. It’s about a 1/2 hour trip (50 Km.) if you follow the attached map. See you there. (Would Team Captains please call team members and remind them of this event.)

July 2, 1985 - The 8 of us who visited the camp with wives on June 17 for a BBQ and camp tour were disappointed with the turnout although we had a good evening. There’s lots of work to be done - grass cutting, roof repairs, septic tank lid repair, painting, fireplace finishing, cabin gable end repairs. Roof repairs, painting and fireplace facing have all been started with the road gravelled. Lots of help still required, so please plan on joining the gang.
